Where We Stayed: Charlevoix

Weathervane Terrace Inn

sunny 60 °F

The Weathervane Terrace Inn and Suites is located in downtown Charlevoix. It sits along the channel connecting Lakes Charleviox and Michigan. The location is great because you can walk to the downtown shops as well as the beach.

The Weathervane's main buildlng was designed by local architect Earl Young and built in the 1960s. There is also a newer building.

Our room was in the older, original building. My daughter liked how the hotel looked like a castle, with most of the staircases to the second floor encased in towers.

What none of us liked was that the curving stairs in the towers were a pain to navigate with bags and that our room was on the second floor. What's more, our building had no elevators.

My daughter didn't want to climb these stairs, and I felt uneasy carrying her up and down them, especially when I had luggage or was wearing heels. We learned that in some cases it was worth the walk to the only non-curving staircase in the building.

This hotel's extra beds are air mattresses instead of rollaway cots. This was great for us: we didn't have to worry about my daughter rolling out of bed or packing her inflatable guard rails. However, when we got to our room, we saw that they had put us in a room that already had 2 beds. The air mattress was actually standing up on its side because there wasn't much extra space for it.

As it turned out, we had just enough room to set the air mattress down towards the back of the room and still have a clear path to the bathroom.

The hotel room had a couple of nice touches for families with young kids. Our standard room came equipped with a microwave and fridge. The sink was also pretty low, which made it easier for my daughter to reach without a stepstool.

Breakfast: included with the room. There were pastries, oatmeal, cold cereal, juice, coffee, and a do-it-yourself waffle maker.
Bathroom: shower/tub combo
Blow dryer: yes
Crib: we didn't use one, but they are available. The twin-size air mattress for my daughter was free of charge.
Internet: in-room and lobby wifi are available free of charge. We didn't give it much of a test run because of our short stay and because we only had our phones with us.
Elevator: none in the original building. The new building has one, though.
Nearest playground: not sure, but Lake Michigan's beaches are a short walk away.

Recommend to childless friends: sure‚Ä®
Recommend to friends with young kids: sure, but try to get a room in the newer building or the first floor of the original building.
